Horse News You Can Use from NYSTBDF Executive Director Tracy Egan

I’m fired up today over a terrific rescue operation under way for some of our nation’s wild mustangs. I learned more about it last night from watching the “Supreme Extreme Mustang Makeover” competition on the the Rural Farm TV High Def channel. As impressive as the mustangs were in the show ring while carrying their riders over barrels, chasing down cows, performing roll backs, and doing flying lead changes while bridleless, it was even more impressive how bonded their handlers were to the horses. And all this after just 120 days of human handling. The owner/trainers were also competing for a top prize of $50,000. Incredibly, the exhibitors truly seemed to care more about how well their rescued horses took to being good all-around riding horses than they did about the prize money.

Best of all, the show demonstrates what great friends/mounts the wild horses can become with the right kind of training. Because the competition generated so much interest, the deadline to submit an application to adopt a mustang has been extended until Monday, March 7th. So how ‘bout it NY breeders and horsemen/women? Save a mustang, forge a bond, win some money!

You can read more about the Mustang Makeover below. Maybe there are some lessons in there for those of us who already love and revere our off-track thoroughbreds. Let’s do a better job of highlighting what great mounts and friends our OTTB’s can become. I’d love to see pictures and read your stories about your t-bred!

Application deadline extended to March 7!
