Breeder Awards

In 2011, the New York State Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund paid $6,351,050 to breeders of registered New York-breds. A breeder is the owner of a mare at the time she foals in New York State. Breeder awards are determined based on the covering stallion. If a New York-bred is by a registered New York-based stallion, the breeder award has been increased to 30% of the purse earned for a first-place finish and to 15% for a second- or third-place finish. If the New York-bred is by an out-of-state or non-registered stallion, the breeder award has been increased to 15% for a first-place finish and to 7.5% for a second- or third-place finish. In addition, the cap on breeder awards for NY-sired NY-breds has been raised to $40,000 per horse, per race, and the cap on breeder awards for non-NY-sired NY-breds has been raised to $20,000 per horse, per race.

Stallion Owner Awards

The New York State Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund distributed $1,334,934 in 2011 stallion owner awards. These awards are paid to owners of registered New York-based (at the time of conception) covering stallions. Stallion owner awards have been increased to 10% of purses earned from finishes in first through third place. All stallion owner awards are capped at $10,000 per horse, per race.

Open-Company Owner Awards

Owners of registered New York-breds who earned purse money in open-company races were paid $993,323 by the New York State Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund in 2011. The owner award for a registered New York-bred sired by a registered New York-based stallion is up to 20% of purses earned from finishes in first through third place in races run for a claiming price of $30,000 and upward, with a cap of $20,000 per horse, per race. If a New York-bred is by an out-of-state or non-registered stallion, the award is up to 10% of purses earned from finishes in first through third place in races run for a claiming price of $30,000 and upward, with a cap of $20,000 per horse, per race.
