New York State-Bred Registry Q & A

My mare just had a foal. What is the next step?
After passing out some cigars - fill out the Jockey Club Live-Foal report which usually has been sent to you in advance and notify the Fund by filling out a foaling card or use the online Foaling Card in the Fastrack Forms section.

What are foaling cards and how do I receive them?
Foaling cards are postcards provided by the Fund to be filled out when your mare has a foal. There is an annual mailing of these cards. Or you may fill out the online Foaling Card in the Fastrack Forms section..

What are movement cards and how do I receive them?
A mare-movement card is required when mares move into or out of New York State. This assists the Fund in the registration process. The card provides the Inspection Team with information which is used to maximize their farm visits and facilitates the data gathering. An annual mailing of these cards is provided or you can use our online Mare Movement Cards in the Fastrack Forms section..

What is a Resident mare?
A resident mare of 1996 and subsequent years must be continuously in residence in the State of New York from no later than 90 days after her last cover in the year of conception and thereafter remain in residence until foaling in New York State.

What is a Non-resident mare?
A non-resident mare is a mare that does not reside in New York State and must foal in New York State and be bred-back to a Registered New York stallion and thereafter remain in New York State for a continuous period of 90 days after giving birth to such foal.

What qualifies my foal to become a Registered New York Bred?
Because of several rules changes over the past few years it depends on the foaling year. You can call the Fund office at (212) 465-0660.

Why do I have to mail the foals Jockey Club papers to you by certified-return mail?
The Jockey Club certificate is an important document and in order to avoid any mishaps sending the papers by certified mail insures that both you and the Fund will have a traceable record.

How do I register my foal as a New York Bred?
Fill out the proper form for the year of foaling. These forms are provided by the Fund or in some cases by the foaling farms. Easiest way is to click into the Fastrack Forms section and fill out application paying with Visa or MasterCard. Or, if you prefer, you can download application in same section. Another option is to fill out the Information Request Form, or you contact Fund office at (518) 580-0100 or email us at nybreds@nybreds.com with your request and mailing address.

How will I know when the New York-bred eligibility process is completed?
There is no need to send Jockey Club registration papers to Fund office. The Fund will send you a written acknowledgement and certification card at the completion of registration process, which you can attach to Jockey Club registration papers, if you wish. Another option is to check the Registration Status section located on the homepage of nybreds.com -- direct link: http://www.nybreds.com/sealed/sealed_search.html

Can I fill out the registration papers before I receive the foals Jockey Club papers?
Yes. The foal application can be submitted as soon as it is born, however final processing for New York-bred status is predicated on completed Jockey Club papers, which the Fund is made aware of through automatic bi-weekly notifications.

How much does it cost to register a foal?
The rate varies depending on the age of the foal. If applied for by December 31st in the year of the foal's birth, the fee is $75. The yearling fee is $150 - the two year old fee is $250 and the three year old and up fee is $500.

When do I have to send the foals Jockey Club papers to the Fund?
When you receive your Jockey Club Foal Certificate, it should be mailed (certified- return receipt) to the Registrar. In order for you to receive award monies the papers must be sealed prior to entry. New York-breds entered in a restricted race in New York State without a seal will automatically be scratched and not entitled to a star.

What are the advantages of registering my horse if I do not plan to race it?
You never know when you may sell your horse so it is certainly to your advantage to register all horses as weanlings at the nominal fee to protect your investment in case of future sale. The horse will be worth much more as a registered New York-bred.

As a breeder if I sell my horse can it still be registered?
Yes. You as the breeder and the farm manager or veterinarian at the time of foaling, must then sign the application form, but the earlier the better.

Can I sign my spouses name on the registration form?
No. Only the breeder of record may sign the form. Also, a husband cannot sign as farm manager and the wife can't sign as breeder or vice versa.
