Resident mares and Non-resident mares

The rules are simple and effectively create two categories of mares - resident and non-resident. To qualify for registration as a New York-bred, the mare must FOAL in New York State and meet the following domicile requirements:

Resident Mares: Be continuously in residence in New York State from within 90 days after last cover in the year of conception and thereafter remain in residence until FOALING the following year, with no Breed-Back required.

Non-Resident Mares: Must FOAL in New York State and be BRED-BACK to a registered New York-based stallion and remain for a continuous period of 90 days after foaling. For further information contact Fund Registrar at 518 580-0100.

Stallions

A stallion standing in New York State at the time he was bred to the dam of a New York-bred. A stallion must be registered with the New York State-bred Registry and must be (1) owned by a resident of this state and standing the entire season in this state or, (2) owned by a resident of another state but standing the entire stud season in this state and leased by a resident of this area for a term of not less than two years. Leases must be filled with the New York State-bred Registry.
