(3/5) Circle of Life Returns
Last year's Spinaway Stakes(GI) winner, New York-bred CIRCLE OF LIFE, returned to the races at Gulfstream Park today, and quickly sent a message that she is ready to resume her place against the best of her division. Scratched from her last start after a minor injury to her hoof, Circle of Life was entered against allowance company for her three year-old debut. Breaking cleanly, jockey John Velazquez easily assumed the lead, keeping the chestnut filly off the rail while under a relaxed hand ride. At the top of the stretch, Velazquez let out a notch and the daughter of Belong To Me-Concentric, by Shadeed, opened up 3 lengths on the field and closed a last 1/8th in a quick :12.1!
Bred by John Franks, Circle of Life is owned by Michael Tabor who purchase the talented filly at a two-year old in training sale for $700,000. Complete details as to her next race are unavailable at this time.

NOT SO FAST(3/4) STYMIE HDCP (G3)
New York-bred NOT SO FAST continued his remarkable turnaround since being claimed last July 29th for $35,000, capturing the Stymie Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct Racetrack. The only New York-bred in a field of 8, was rated on the outside the entire way including a 4 wide move around the last turn in the 1-1/8th mile affair for 3 year-old & up colts and geldings. The Bruce Levine trained 6 year-old horse has now won 4 races for Double T Stable, picking up another $49,920 AND an owners' award of $9,984 from the New York Breeding and Racing Program!
Bred by Stephanie Phillips, Not So Fast is by Double Negative, out of Timeless Affect, by Timeless Moment. Ms. Phillips will, also, collect a breeders' award of $9,984 and in New York, where none of the connections are left out, the stallion owner will receive $3,494. This win pushes Not So Fast's Lifetime earnings to $309,751 with a Record of: 38-10-8-5.

REALITY CHIC(3/3) Worth the Wait
Michael Palenscar's REALITY CHIC made it to the races as a 5 year-old and his patience was paid off today as the bay Cormorant-Flag Reality, by In Reality, mare destroyed an open Maiden Special Weight field today at Aqueduct Racetrack. With two sprint races under her belt in January, trainer Bob Ribaudo placed Reality Chic in a 1 mile-70 yards race (a two-turn race on the inner track) and she responded with an overwhelming 14-1/2 length score.
Bred by Mr. Palenscar, Reality Chic's win garners him a breeder's award of $5,040 and an owner's award, for the open company win, of $5,040 - all part of the New York Breeding and Racing Program incentive awards.

(3/2) New York-Bred 2YOs Average $313,600 at Calder Select Sale - Colt Bred by Gallagher's Stud Brings $1.25-Million by Rab Hagin
A record price for a New York-bred racing prospect sold at auction was set Tuesday, February 29, when agent John Moynihan went to $1,250,000 for a Storm Cat colt consigned by Hartley-Derenzo Thoroughbreds, agent, at Fasig-Tipton Florida's selected 2-year-olds in training sale held at Calder Race Course. Reportedly bought on behalf of Massachusetts racehorse owner Paul Robsham, the colt is a full brother to New York-bred Adcat, who won the 1999 graded New Hampshire Sweepstakes for owner-breeder Jerry Brody of Gallagher Stud in Ghent, New York. Also bred by Gallagher's Stud, this colt and Adcat as well as stakes winner Adorydar ($231,425) are out of Brody's New York-bred graded winner, Adorable Micol, who won stakes in France and the U.S. and earned $246,815.

The $1,250,000 bid broke the record of $900,000 for a New York-bred racing prospect sold at auction, set by another colt bred by Gallagher's Stud, a son of Seattle Slew sold at Keeneland's 1999 July selected yearling sale. Offered in that same Keeneland consignment, the Storm Cat colt's catalog page had gone to press shortly before stakes-placed Adcat's New Hampshire Sweepstakes win on June 19, perhaps being a factor in his failure to meet his reserve on a final bid of $450,000. The seven-month wait resulted in the colt's value increasing by 178 percent.

The new record highlighted an excellent showing by New York-breds, with 10 bringing bids totaling $3,136,000 for a $313,600 average that was 45 percent higher than the sale's overall average of $215,962, which was up 18 percent over 1999. Five New York-breds offered -- or 33 percent of the 15 that went through the ring -- were not sold, verses 41 percent not sold (108 of 264) among all the sale's 2-year-olds in what was described as a prestigious but highly critical market.

Also among the 10 highest-priced juveniles sold at the Calder auction was a New York-bred Silver Deputy colt consigned by Robert N. Scanlon, agent, and purchased for $525,000 by Aaron and Marie Jones. This colt was a $130,000 sales weanling who failed to meet his reserve (bringing a final bid of $150,000) at the Saratoga selected yearling sale last August. He had one of the faster furlong works (10 2/5) at the February 20 under tack show.

Scanlon also consigned a New York-bred Two Punch colt that was bought for $375,000 by Eugene Melnyk, who earlier had been the under-bidder on the $1,250,000 New York-bred Storm Cat colt. The Two Punch colt had fetched a final bid of $127,000 from Arthur Williamson at Fasig-Tipton New York's Saratoga preferred yearling sale in August. Bringing a bid of $330,000 from Anstu Stable, Inc., was a New York-bred filly by New York stallion Signal Tap consigned by Academy Bloodstock (Robert J. Harris, agent), which had purchased her for $90,000 at Keeneland's 1999 September yearling sale. The filly, which also clocked an impressive 10 2/5 furlong work on February 20, had sold for $29,000 as a Keeneland November weanling in 1998.

Other profitable pinhooks among New York-breds at the Calder sale were a Roar colt consigned by Eddie Woods, agent, and purchased for $220,000 by John Sadler, agent, and a Signal Tap colt consigned by Sequel Bloodstock (Becky Thomas), agent, that was bought for $200,000 by Chanceland Farm, agent. The Roar colt had brought $140,000 as a yearling and $62,000 as a weanling -- both times at Keeneland -- where the Signal Tap colt had fetched $42,000 as a weanling.
