Open Allowance Winner
A rain soaked Saratoga Race Course did not present any difficulties
for New York-bred CRITICAL EYE as she beat open allowance company
for the second time in a row. After winning over the grass at Belmont Park,
trainer Scott Schwartz took advantage of a favorable open condition for
his three year-old daughter of Dynaformer, and she responded with a two
and one-half length score.
Ridden shrewdly by jockey Jorge Chavez, Critical Eye was taken to the outside
portion of the main track, which seemed to be alot firmer than the inside
positions, and rated kindly until asked at the top of the stretch.
Owned and bred by Herbert and Carol Schwartz, Critical Eye is out of the
Dr. Blum mare, Critical Crew, who earned $73,519 during her racing career.
Today's open company win pushes Critical Eye's earnings to $160,677 and
aside from the breeder's award of $2,880 the Schwartz' will also receive
an owner's award of $2,880 for the open company score.
(7/31) THE LAKE GEORGE-Gr.III
New York-bred SHOPPING FOR LOVE closed strongly in the stretch over
the soft going at Saratoga Race Course to finish second to Millie's Quest,
who she finished ahead of in the Grade 3-Sands Point Stake at Belmont Park.
Jockey Norberto Arroyo aboard Shopping For Love, was looking for racing
room as the field straigthened for home and lost some momentum as Millie's
Quest drove to the lead. Owners Donald George and Dennis D'Arcangelo will
pick up an additional owner's award for the second place finish in open
company by the daughter of Not For Love-Instant Shopper, by D'Accord.

Two Year-Old Maiden Winner
Racing for the first time for the Seven Pins Stable, BROCCO BOB,
broke his maiden today at Saratoga Race Course. Purchased privately from
leading trainer, Bob Baffert, Brocco Bob was put on the lead early by jockey
Mike Smith and he held his position on the sloppy surface to the stretch,
digging in gamely in the late going to hold off all challengers by a half-length.
Trained by John Terranova, Brocco Bob is by Brocco, out of the Bold Ruckus
mare, Inaruckus. Brocco Bob was bred by Patricia Purdy at her and her husband
Chris' Ivy League Farm in Ithaca, New York and is the second two year-old
maiden winner at Saratoga bred by the Purdys.

First Crack Out
James F. Edwards' homebred, REDDING WOODS, won at first asking
against state-bred two year-olds today at Saratoga Race Course. Racing over
a sloppy track, jockey Jerry Bailey eased the son of Cure The Blues-Distinctive
Star, by Distinctive Pro, into contention of the backstretch in the five
and one-half furlong race, and drew off in the stretch holding off a late
closing Reluctant Groom.
The dam, Distinctive Star, is a half-sister to Queen of Millbrook, who broke
her maiden at Saratoga as a two year-old and went on to win several stakes
races including the Lady Fingers as a two year-old and New York Oaks as
a three year-old banking $213,540.
Mr. Edwards is hoping that this is an omen of things to come as he looks
forward to capturing the Big Apple Triple with
his horse Image Maker on Aug. 31st in the Albany Handicap.

Terrific Return
Hats off to the great conditioning job trainer Gary Contessa put in on
STORM THE GATE, bringing the chestnut colt him back from a seven and
a half month layoff to win at Saratoga Race Course against state-bred allowance
horses. Away from the gate slowly, jockey Jorge Chavez gradually moved the
three year-old son of Prospectors Gamble into contention approaching the
last turn. Swinging his charge wide, Chavez ran by the front runners in
the stretch drive and won going away by two lengths.
Owned by the partnership of Darlene Bilinski, William Coyro and Bruce Tanski,
Storm the Gate was bred by Patricia Purdy at her and her husband, Chris',
Ivy League Farm in Ithaca, New York. Storm the Gate was purchased as a two-year
old in training at the 1999 March OBS for $35,000 and has now won $94,877
with a Lifetime Record: 8-2-2-3.

NEW YORK DERBY
James F. Edwards' IMAGE
MAKER took another step toward sweeping the Big Apple Triple series,
for New York-bred three year-olds, by winning the $125,000 New York Derby
today, at Finger Lakes Racetrack in Farmington, New York. The H. James Bond
trained Image Maker answered all questions, as to whether he could negotiate
two-turns, with a convincing score over Impeachthepro, who was the main
threat in the shortened field of six traveling one and one-sixteenth mile.
Jockey Filiberto Leon was Image Maker's third rider in as many races, and
rode the three year-old son of Distinctive Pro-Halo Country, by Halo perfectly
from off the pace moving to the pace-setter, Impeachthepro, at the head
of the stretch before running by to win by two and one-quarter lengths.
The third and final leg of the Big Apple Triple
series will be the $150,000 Albany Handicap, contested at one and one-eight
mile at Saratoga Race Course on August 31st. If Image Maker wins the Albany
Handicap, Mr. Edwards will collect an additional $250,000 in bonus money.
The four-time stakes winner has boosted his earnings to $329,065 with an
impressive Lifetime Record: 8-5-2-1!

ARCTIC QUEEN HANDICAP
Margaret Lannon's homebred, BELONGS TO MONY, cleverly ridden by jockey
John Grabowski, captured the 3rd running of the Arctic Queen Handicap for
New York-bred fillies and mares at Finger Lakes Racetrack. Tucked in neatly
behind Financial Lady and Ashley's Matinee who battled for the lead, Grabowski
moved the four year-old chestnut filly into contention coming off the last
turn in the six furlong affair and collared Financial Lady in deep stretch
to win by a half-length.
Belongs to Mony is by Belong To Me, out of the Gate Dancer mare, Do Wah
Duchess, who is a half-sister to graded stakes placed winner Proudest Duke
(Regal and Royal) and stakes placed winners Pad (Notebook) and Cuvee Brut
(Pentelicus). Today's win elevates Belongs To Mony's earnings to $142,978
with a Lifetime Record: 23-8-5-4.
(7/29) PHILADELPHIA BREEDER'S CUP HDCP- GR.-III
New York-bred SAY FLORIDA SANDY closed to finish second in the $200,000
Philadephia Breeder's Cup Handicap today picking up another $40,000 in purse
money as he nears the $1 Million mark in earnings.
(7/29) Test Stakes
New York-bred fillies CIRCLE OF LIFE and DAT YOU MIZ BLUE
did not hit the board in today's running of the Grade I Test Stakes at Saratoga
Race Course. Dat You Miz Blue contested the pace around the last turn, swing
three wide coming off the turn but was outrun by winner Dream Supreme and
passed in the final sixteenth for third money by Finder's Fee. Grade I winner
Circle of Life continues to puzzle in her three year-old year.
(7/28) Bernard Baruch Handicap - Gr. II
New York-bred DRAW SHOT put in his usual stretch run to finish third
today in the $150,000 Bernard Baruch Handicap over the turf at Saratoga
Race Course beaten only two lengths to Hap and Inexplicable.

(7/28) Test Stake - Grade I
Two New York-bred fillies, Circle of Life and Dat You Miz Blue,
return to the scene of their best triumphs to date in Saturday's Grade I
Test Stakes for 3 year-old fillies at Saratoga Race Course.
Last year, Circle of Life won the Grade I Spinaway Stakes at this same distance
- seven furlongs - for trainer Todd Pletcher, who has won this event the
past two years with Jersey Girl and Marley Vale.
Dat You Miz Blue won a New York-bred maiden by over 14 lengths over this
racetrack and recently finished second in the Grade II Prioress at Belmont
Park. Both New York-breds would benefit from a fast pace setting up their
closing styles.
(7/28) Gallo Clients Profit Handsomely at Fasig-Tipton Ky. Yearling
Sale
Tom Gallo of Cambridge, New York (near Saratoga Springs), has yet to make
claims to clairvoyance, but breeders still are astounded at what his Thomas
J. Gallo Sales Agency has achieved for Dennis and Debbie Petrisak's Langpap
Stable of Rochester, NY. For the Petrisaks, Mr. Gallo sold colts by Mr.
Greeley and Belong to Me for $270,000 and $100,000, respectively, at the
recent Fasig-Tipton Kentucky yearling sale - the former to trainer Bob Baffert
for Prince Ahmed bin Salman's Thoroughbred Corp.; the latter to agent Baden
(Buzz) Chace for Ernie Paragallo. The Petrisaks bred both colts from young
pregnant mares purchased privately by Mr. Gallo for about a $38,000 average
in 1998.
The $270,000 Mr. Greeley colt is out of Explosive Scarlet, an Illinois-bred
Explodent mare who had won or placed in 14 of 18 starts, including five
stakes as a 2-year-old, earning $117,274. At the time Mr. Gallo purchased
Explosive Scarlet, her first foal, a homebred Housebuster colt named Sweet
Baby James, had won his first two starts as a juvenile by four and two lengths
in Illinois state-bred company at Hawthorne. Her second, a homebred Prized
colt named R. Little Redhead, was a yearling. Mr. Greeley was a $10,000
fee stallion whose first sales yearlings were averaging over $90,000.
In February of 1999, Explosive Scarlet delivered her colt by Mr. Greeley,
and by the time that colt went into the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky auction ring
17 months later, his half-brother, Sweet Baby James, had won or placed in
five stakes, earning $297,482. His other half-brother, R. Little Redhead,
had placed second in the mud at Arlington Park in his first start, then
had led all the way to win two weeks later at Arlington by 3 1/2 lengths.
And Mr. Greeley had developed into one of North America's top-10 second-crop
sires.
The $100,000 Belong to Me colt is the first foal out of Flying Nightengale,
a 5-year-old Clever Trick mare and the only offspring out of Nurse Dopey,
who had won 16 races, including 11 stakes, and earned $456,362. Belong to
Me had been a 1997 freshman sire sensation, and the Petrisaks, who along
with Mr. Gallo were share-holders in that stallion, wanted a young mare
in foal to him. The two colts were foaled only nine days apart in February
at the Petrisaks' farm in Honeoye Falls, just outside of Rochester.
What attracted Mr. Gallo to the two mares he bought for the Petrisaks? "I
liked them physically, and I liked the way their pedigrees crossed with
the stallions they were in foal to," replied Mr. Gallo, who also owns
Blue Stone Farm in Cambridge, where he operates his full service bloodstock
agency while working in close consultation with international pedigree analyst
Alan Porter. In fact, one of Mr. Greeley's graded/group stakes colts of
2000, Irish winner McDab, is out of a daughter of Explodent - just like
Explosive Scarlet.
Mr. Gallo plans to continue buying mares to produce registered New York-breds
which he sends as weanlings to Bill Sanborn's Sandborn Chase in Kentucky,
where they are prepped to be sold as yearlings at major Kentucky sales and
at Saratoga for various clients. He also plans to enter into foal-sharing
arrangements when purchasing mares booked to or in foal to stallions with
high stud fees. As the Petrisaks already know, Mr. Gallo has excellent insights
into investing profitably in the Thoroughbred industry. See Broodmare
News for more info.

(7/26) SCHUYLERVILLE - Gr. II
New York-bred SEEKING IT ALL, bumped and banged around in mid-stretch,
still managed to finish second by a half-length against favorite Gold Mover
in the opening day feature, the $100,000 added Schuylerville-Gr.II for two-year
old fillies at Saratoga Race Course. What's remarkable about the effort
from Barry K. Schwartz' homebred is that she was only making her second
lifetime start after finishing second in her debut against state-bred fillies
in late June.
New York-bred Seeking It All is by A.P. Indy, out of the Seeking The Gold
mare, Seeking Regina, who won the 1994 running of the Gr.II- Adirondack
Stake for two year-old fillies at Saratoga!

Saratoga Opens
Historic Saratoga Race Course, located in upstate New York in the charming
city of Saratoga Springs, opened it's doors for the 132 year. After today's
opening steeplechase race, New York-bred maidens competed in a seven furlong
main track race and put on one heckuva show for the opening day crowd. As
the field straightened for home, Stealing Beauty and Frisco Folly, hooked
up in a ding-dong battle to the wire, with STEALING BEAUTY emerging
as the race winner.
Owned by the partnership of Double R Stable, Kaufman and Iselin, Stealing
Beauty was bred by J I Racing, Inc. and is by Double Negative, out of the
L'Enjoleur mare, La Cajoleuse, who produced graded stakes winners Cajoleuse's
Speed (Golden Derby) and Gene Propp's Dream (Golden Derby).

(7/23) NEW YORK DERBY
The second leg of the Big Apple Triple, for New
York-bred three year-olds, will be run on Saturday, July 29th at Finger
Lakes Racetrack in Farmington, New York, with the renewal of the New
York Derby which is now worth $125,000 for the one and one-sixteenth mile
race.
James F. Edwards' IMAGE MAKER, winner of the Mike Lee Handicap, will
be making his first attempt in a two-turn race, although he's no stranger
to the surface at Finger Lakes Racetrack. Trainer H. James Bond, a native
of the Finger Lakes region, saddled Image Maker in two stakes races at Finger
Lakes Racetrack as a two-year. The dark bay colt finished second over an
'off-track' in the Aspirant Stakes before winning the $100,000 New York
Futurity by six and three-quarter lengths over a fast surface. In the Mike
Lee Handicap run at Belmont Park on July 1st, Image Maker had to check hard
up the backstretch and lost ground and momemtum, causing jockey Jorge Chavez
to urge his charge to give a little extra through the stretch run. Making
up over 7 lengths, Image Maker caught the front runners in the final strides
avoiding interference from Entepreneur as he bore out into Appealing Danger,
which resulted in a disqualification to third.
Never off the board in his seven lifetime starts, the three year-old son
of Distinctive Pro, out of the Halo mare, Halo Country, also won the Bertram
F. Bongard Stakes at Aqueduct as a two year-old and goes into the New York
Derby with an impressive Lifetime Record: 7-4-2-1 and earnings of $254,065.
The Field:
1. Impeachthepro
2. Woodwork
3. Beau Tie
4. Image Maker
5. Raggamuffin
6. Boo Boo Bear
7. Appealing Danger

DEARLY PRECIOUS STAKES
Aliyuee Ben J Stable's New York-bred, CEDAR
KNOLLS, outdueled My Brent's Diamond to capture the Dearly Precious
Stakes for three year-old fillies at Monmouth Park on Saturday, July 22nd.
After an awkward beginning, jockey J.C. Ferrer, took hold of the game three-year
old dark bay filly moving to the leaders in the final turn of the six furlong
race over the main track and then battled to the wire with her aforementioned
foe.
Bred by Leonard Pivnick, Cedar Knolls finished second in the restricted
Bouwerie Stakes in late May and has hit the board in all of her nine races.
The daughter of Broad Brush, out of the Lost Code mare, Codetogo, has an
impressive Lifetime Record: 9-3-5-1 - with earnings now at $132,530!
Cedar Knolls becomes the 18th New York-bred to capture an open stakes this
year and the 20th overall open stakes winner.
(7/23)
EVAN SHIPMAN STAKES
The field for the 20th running of the Evan Shipman was one of the most talented
ever assembled with most of the horses being either a stakes winner or graded
stakes winner. The average lifetime earnings of the field averaged just
shy of $310,000!
Gatsas Stable's GANDER,
now being trained by John Terranova II, won his first stakes of the year,
the $75,000 Evan Shipman Stakes. Last year, Gander won the $250,000 Empire
Classic at Belmont Park and the $125,000 Albany Handicap at Saratoga Springs.
Jockey Jerry Bailey hustled Gander out of the gate to battle with Phil The
Grip and Shut Out Time for the early lead and the trio raced that way into
the last turn of the one and one-sixteenth mile race contested over Belmont
Park's main track. As they straigthened for home Bailey urged the four year-old
gray colt for more run and he responded with a determined drive to the wire
to win by two lengths over Shut Out Time.
Purchased at the 1998 March OBS two-year old in training sales for $50,000,
Gander has now earned $483,628 with a Lifetime Record:26-8-5-2! Bred by
Angela Rugnetta, Gander is by Cormorant, out of the Sawbones mare, Lovely
Nurse.

MEET FINALE
Earle I. Mack's homebred, LADIES NIGHT IN, who started her racing
career in New Jersey, returned to her home state to beat state-bred allowance
fillies to close out the Spring/Summer Belmont Park meet. Ridden by jockey
Jorge Chavez, the four year-old Peteski filly sprang to the lead from the
10 horse position and never relented to constant pressure to win by a length
over Pearly White. Ladies Night In is out of the Ascot Knight mare, Ladies'
Day.
Racing resumes this coming Wednesday at historic Saratoga Race Course in
Saratoga Springs. Upcoming New York-bred stakes races at the Spa include
the Yaddo, the West Point and the third and final leg of the Big
Apple Triple Series - the $150,000 Albany Handicap for New York-bred
three year-olds.
(7/22) NIAGARA STAKES
After rearing and hitting her head in her previous race, DOUBLE THE BET
rebounded with a flawless effort today to win the 21st runing of the Niagara
Stakes at Finger Lakes Racetrack under the clever handling of jockey Dean
Frates. Owned by Jerry Kil, the 3 year-old daughter of Double Negative was
perfectly placed up the backstretch and with a bold move took command of
the race by two lengths before holding off a fast closing Doasyouaretold
by a head at the wire.
Bred by Sari Manzino and trained by Jon Buckley, Double the Bet is out of
the Smead mare, Schmuckle, who hit the board in 18 of her 31 career starts.
Today's win doubles Double the Bet's earnings to $36,018 with a Lifetime
Record: 5-4-0-1.
(7/22) Maiden Score
Ancient Mariner Stables' MARITIME BRASS lead from gate to wire to
win the last race on the card - a six furlong affair for state-bred maiden
fillies and mares. Racing over the main track at beautiful Belmont Park
the Saturday afternoon crowd were treated to great racing and enjoyed a
picture perfect day in the New York metropolitan area. Ridden by jockey
Julio Pezua and trained by Dennis Brida, Maritime Brass is a four year-old
daughter of Dixie Brass, out of the It's Freezing mare, Winnebug.

Sports Talk
Summer Wind Stables' ON THE FAN, responding to the urgings of jockey
Jerry Bailey, made a sweeping four wide move in the last turn of the one
and one-eight mile turf race and chased down the front runners to beat state-bred
allowance horses by one and one-half lengths. In clever ride over the inner
track course at Belmont Park, Bailey was determined not to let the field
get too far away while avoiding some road traffic up the backstretch.
Summer Wind Stable is comprised of WFAN Sports Talk host Mike Francesca
and Bill Parcells, former head coach of the New York Jets, and two time
winning Superbowl Champion New York Giants. For those that listen to the
popular afternoon syndicated talk show, Mike and the Mad Dog (Chris Russo),
Francesca occasionally will tout his horse and is a big fan of Thoroughbred
racing, especially New York-breds which he owns and breeds.
On the Fan is by the 1992 Travers Stakes winner, Thunder Rumble, out of
the Talc mare, Bo Bo's Sister, who's a full-sister to stakes winners Talc
Power, Talc's Coventry and Kate's Valentine and a half-sister to stakes
winner Crafty Coventry (Crafty Prospector). On the Fan was purchased by
Summer Wind Stable at the 1998 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Preferred Sale for
$19,000. With today's winners purse, the three year-old bay gelding has
now earned $88,920 with a Lifetime Record: 15-2-2-3.
(7/21) High Flyer
Seymour Cohn's two year-old homebred, AFFAIR IN THE AIR, wired the
field today at beautiful Belmont Park against state-bred maidens. After
two previous starts, the half-brother to Pentelis and Chasin' Wimmin' was
the most experienced horse in the group and he showed it with a professional
effort under jockey Jorge Chavez. By first crop sire, A.P Jet, out of the
Deputy Minister mare, Open Marriage, the big chestnut gelding seems destined
for stakes company in the near future. A.P Jet stands at Sugar
Maple Farm in Poughquag, New York and has now sired three winners from
his first crop.

(7/20) New York-bred Yearlings Soar
Nine New York-breds passed under the hammer in the recently held Fasig-Tipton
Kentucky Selected Yearling Sale and the average price for the eight New
York-breds who sold was $103,375 with one not reaching it's reserve price.
The complete results for the entire sale were not available as of this writing
but the number of yearlings not reaching their reserve after the Wednesday
session was a high 34%. For complete results of the New York-breds who sold
please click here.
Leading trainer, Bob Baffert, acting as agent, signed the sales ticket for
New York-bred sales topper, a bay colt by Mr. Greeley, out of the stakes
winning mare Explosive Scarlet, for $270,000. Consigned by
Nadine and Thomas Gallo, acting as agent for Langpap Stable of Rochester,
New York, the horse was part of a two horse consignment. Top agent, 'Buzzy'
Chace signed the ticket for the other yearling colt in the consignment,
a Belong To Me-Flying Nightengale colt which sold for $100,000. Also, selling
well, was a full brother to half-million plus earner, New York-bred Mellow
Roll, who brought $122,000.
(7/20) Gottem by the Tail
TIGER BABE took advantage of a large opening along the inside rail
during the stretch run and stormed to a three length victory for owners
Mark Lansing and John Desmond, who bred the three year-old bay filly at
his farm in Ballston Spa, New York.
Trainer Leo O'Brien had the Ends Well-Tiger's Burn filly sharp as a tack
for her second career start after finishing back in a sprint race in her
maiden debut in late June. Ridden by apprentice jockey Norberto Arroyo,
Jr., Tiger Babe was up close to the pace while saving ground along the rail,
and showed neatly switched gears when opportunity presented itself.
(7/20) Belmont Finale
Owner/trainer Roy Lerman went back to the drawing board after his three
year-old bay filly, TIS, put in a dismal performance at the end of
May, when she was eased in the stretch. Apparently, he figured out what
was ailing her because she came back to beat state-bred maiden fillies and
mares today at beautiful Belmont Park. Racing over the Widener turf course
at one and one-sixteenth mile, jockey Jorge Chavez had Tis on the lead from
the outset. Controlling the pace throughout the entire race, Tis drew off
to win by 2-1/2 comfortable lengths.
Bred by Dr. Jerry Bilinski and Martin Zaretsky at Dr. Bilinski's Waldorf
Farm in Old Chatham, New York, Tis is by Bold Ruckus, out of the stakes
winning mare Cazzy B., by Cormorant.
(7/19)
Solid Performance
RUTHIE'S DOUBLE notched his second lifetime win, in 5 career starts,
today beating state-bred allowance horses at Belmont Park. Racing at a distance
of 7 furlongs for a healthy purse of $43,000, jockey Shaun Bridgmohan stalked
the pace setter, Monologue, before taking over the lead at the top of the
stretch and then drew off to a comfortable 3 length margin under the wire.
Owned and bred by Francis S. Casey, Ruthie's Double is by Double Negative-Ruthie's
Relic, by Titanic, and has now banked $70,060 with a Lifetime Record: 5-2-2-0.

ONTARIO STAKES
IMPEACHTHEPRO overwhelmed state-bred three year-olds in the 17th
running of the Ontario Stakes at Finger Lakes Racetrack.. Breaking from
the outside post position in the 6 furlong race, jockey John Grabowski,
patiently guided the dark bay gelding just behind front runner Jessie's
Jig to the top of the stretch before taking command and drew off to a 3
length win over Raggamuffin, who closed well to be second.
Purchased for $20,000, by Nicholas Laneve and William Warner at the 1998
Fasig-Tipton October Mid-lantic Sale, Impeachthepro was bred by the partnership
of Mr. Brendan Tobin and Dr. Win Stevens. By leading sire Distinctive Pro,

Open Allowance Winner
Seymour Cohn's New York-bred, CHASIN' WIMMIN', closed strongly on
the outside to nip Texas Glitter by a nose in a $47,000 allowance race at
beautiful Belmont Park. Ridden by veteran jockey Jean Luc Samyn, the five
year-old gelded son of Belong To Me, out of the Deputy Minister mare, Open
Marriage, hadn't visited the winner's circle since Oct. 2nd, 1999, when
he won the Ashley T. Cole Stakes on the grass.
Bred by Mr. Cohn, Chasin' Wimmin' has banked $215,001 with a Lifetime Record:
22-6-2-2. Because Chasin' Wimmin' earned purse money in open company, the
New York Breeding and Racing Program will pay, aside from the breeder's
awards and stallion awards, an owner's award amounting to $5,640 as part
of the lucrative incentives available to New York-breds.
(7/16) Horse for Course
The threat of rain prompted the presiding judge to move the state-bred allowance
race from turf to the main track and provided an opportunity for BEAU
TIE who was entered by trainer David Donk for the main track only. Breaking
from the outside post in the nine horse field, jockey John Velazquez had
the three year-old dark bay colt up close to the pace, maintaining a clear
path on the outside. Moving four wide in the last turn of the one and one-sixteenth
mile race, he drew clear of the field and drove to the wire a clear three
and a half length winner.
Owned by the partnership of John Behrendt, William Bloom and Charles Marquis
and bred by the Cedar Ridge Farm, Beau Tie is by Distinctive Pro, out of
the Caro Bambino (Ire) mare, Self Image, who also produced stakes placed
winner First Rodeo. Beau Tie has now earned $175,045 with a remarkable Lifetime
Record: 15-3-8-1!

Not So Impossible
Claimed in Chicago at the end of April by Jay Cee Jay Stable and Edwin Wachtel,
New York-bred IMPOSSIBLE MISS beat state-bred allowance fillies and
mares today over the sloppy going at Belmont Park. Having raced at the Fair
Grounds in New Orleans, as well as Chicago area tracks, Hawthorne and Sportsman
Park, and not yet out of her conditions, the New York-based owners realized
that her full earning potential hadn't been realized and claimed her for
$25,000 and have more than earned back the claiming price.
Impossible Miss is by Missionary Ridge, out of the Palace Music mare, Reni,
and has now earned $101,225 with a Lifetime Record: 23-3-2-7.
Aside from his owners, one happy person has to be the breeder, Richard Rudolf,
who finally has a chance to earn breeder's awards from the lucrative New
York Breeding and Racing Program. After four races in New York, Mr. Rudolph,
has earned over $7,000 in breeder's awards! Breeders of registered New York-breds
only earn award money when the horse races in New York State.

THE LADY'S SECRET HANDICAP
Edwin Wachtel's New York-bred BROOMESSE displayed guts and determination
in winning the Lady's Secret Handicap, for fillies and mares, today at beautiful
Belmont Park. Run at a distance of one and one-eight mile over the main
track, jockey Edgar Prado quickly had the 5 year-old daughter of Claramount
on the front end. Moving into the turn, Nadja edged closer to the Broomesse
and as the field straigthened for home, Nadja took the lead but, only briefly
as the dead-game Broomesse came back again to take command and opened up
by five lengths on the field. Out of the Kohoutek mare, Broom Boss, Broomesse
is trained by John DeStefano, Jr., and has now banked $332,199 with a Lifetime
Record: 27-7-12-4. Owner/breeder Edwin Wachtel not only collects a healthy
purse of $37,800 for today's win - he, also, will receive an owner's award
of $7,560 for the open company score, a breeder's award of $7,560 and not
to be forgotten - a stallion award of $2,640 from the lucrative New York
Breeding and Racing Program. The grand total Mr. Wachtel collects amounts
to $55,566 on an original purse of $63,000! That's why New York-breds....They
start with an Advantage!!

Grass is greener
YOU'LL BE HAPPY captured her second straight race over the grass
at Belmont Park. Trainer Leo O'Brien, gave the three year-old daughter of
Wave To Seattle a respite since early January and she has returned to the
races with a vengeance showing a clear liking for the turf. Ridden again
by jockey Norberto Arroyo, Jr., You'll Be Happy took over the lead early
in the one and one-eight mile race for state-bred fillies and mares and
held on gamely for the score. Bred by Michael Spielman and raced under the
name of Nick-Mike Stables, You'll Be Happy is the first foal out of the
Raja Revenge mare, A Nother Another. The win boosts her earnings to $90,220
with a Lifetime Record: 8-3-0-2.
(7/14) LOVELY WAY TO START THE DAY
LOVELY AMANDA showed she likes the turf as well as the main track
coasting to victory today over the inner turf course in Belmont Park's opening
race. Winning her second race in a row and third lifetime win in just 5
starts, the 3 year-old daughter of Belong To Me, out of the Alleged mare,
Love Alleged, has now boosted her earnings to $87,329. Her next foray for
owner/breeders Robert Pierz and Peter McCann will be against open company
fillies and mares or possibly a stakes race. Decision is in the hands of
the highly regarded young trainer, Todd Pletcher, who is no stranger with
daughters of Belong To Me having trained Grade I winning fillies, Jersey
Girl and Circle of Life.
(7/13)
Belmont Feature Exacta
New York-breds, FICKLE FANNY and WINLOC'S DREAM, finished
1-2 in today's featured open allowance race at Belmont Park. Carded at six
furlongs, favorite Fickle Fanny stalked the pace to the top of the stretch
moving by easily to assume the lead by the eight pole and drove to victory
under a hand ride with Winloc's Glorious in pursuit to the wire.
Owned by Richard Englander and bred by Edwin Wachtel, stakes placed Fickle
Fanny is by Claramount - Miss Tess (NZ), By One Pound Sterling (GB). The

Grass is Greener
New York-bred CRITICAL EYE was overlooked by the betting public and
went off at 11-1 odds in an open allowance race with a purse of $50,000
over the Widener Turf course at beautiful Belmont Park. Prior to finishing
seventh in her start, the $101,000 Christiana Stake at Laurel Park, the
three year-old filly won by four lengths against state-bred allowance fillies
and mares. Teaming up, again, with jockey Jorge Chavez, the three year-old
bay filly was eased slowly into the pace. As the field was mid-way in the
last turn, Chavez swung the daughter of Dynaformer seven wide and the filly
flew through the stretch picking off horses one by one and nipped Efficient
Frontier at the wire.
Owned and bred by Herbert and Carol Schwartz, Critical Eye is the first
foal out of the Dr. Blum mare, Critical Crew, who earned $73,519 during
her racing career. The win boosts her earnings to $131,877 and aside from
the breeder's award of $3,000 the Schwartz' will also receive an owner's
award of $3,000 for the open company score.
(7/13) New York-Bred Incredible Revenge is Incredible - Gets
16th Stakes Win
George Marion England Jr.'s INCREDIBLE REVENGE, an 8-year-old New
York-bred mare who might be the best female five-furlong turf sprinter on
the East Coast, got her 16th career stakes victory and 26th win overall
when she captured Penn National's Firecracker Stakes in front-running fashion
on July 3. The win, which boosted Incredible Revenge's earnings to $638,578,
puts the number of open stakes won by New York-breds in 2000 at 19, coming
the day after Say Florida Sandy's Shrewsbury Stakes win on July 2 and the
day before Run With Netti's Proud Puppy Handicap victory on July 4. Those
19 open stakes in 2000 have been won by 17 New York-breds in nine different
states.
Although not a registered New York-bred, Incredible Revenge reportedly is
eligible for registration with the New York breeding program should England
ever wish to race her in New York, where five-furlong grass races - of which
she has won 21 of 32 - are something of a rarity. The mare covered the five
furlongs of the Firecracker in :57.43 over a yielding turf course, and she
still holds a Delaware course turf record of :56 flat for about five furlongs.
England, who also trains Incredible Revenge, bought her as a weanling for
$800 at the 1992 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic mixed sale at Timonium, Maryland.
Bred by Michael Anchel's Treasure Hill Farm in Middletown, Incredible Revenge
is by Edward and Judith Anchel's New York Raja Baba stallion, Raja's Revenge,
whose winners this year also include Garaja ($216,339). Raja's Revenge,
a graded winner at NYRA tracks on both dirt and turf, stands at Dr. Richard
Rieger's Pleasant Valley Thoroughbreds in Goshen, where his fee for 2000
was $2,500, live foal. Incredible Revenge is inbred 3 x 3 to Northern Dancer
and 3 x 4 to Bold Ruler and is among four winners produced by Incredible
Moment, a winning Raise a Native mare whose half-brothers include grade
1 winner Kirby Lane and grade 2 winner Dancing Gun.

Belmont Finale
RICHIE'S GIRLS, ridden cleverly by jockey Richard Migliore, ran by
the pace setters at the top of the stretch and drew off to one length victory
against state-bred allowance fillies and mares. Raced over Belmont Park's
inner turf course at one and one-eight mile, the four year-old daughter
of Black Tie Affair, out of the Raja Baba mare, Anna Geranios, changed tactics
today drafting in behind the early speed and had plenty of run when set
loose.
Owned by E El R Stable, and bred by Jordan Stables, the win elevates her
earnings to $89,120 with a Lifetime Record: 18-2-3-1. She was purchased
at the 1998 OBS February sale of two year-olds in training for $100,000.

(7/13) Two Year-Olds Showcase
Enough entries forced the splitting of two New York-bred maiden races today
for two year-old maiden colts and geldings each carrying a purse of $41,000
at Belmont Park.
In the first division, LADY'S HERO went wire to wire in a hand ride
by jockey Jorge Chavez, coasted under the wire to win by three quarters
of a length over a fast closing Haggs Castle.
Owned and bred by Walter DeForest and Michael Moriarty, Lady's Hero is by
first crop sire, Mighty Magee, out of the Judge Smells mare, One Real Lady.
In the second division, Alice and Ronald Schmidt's BACKSTREET BLUES,
under a hand ride, glided to the pace setters and responded when asked at
the top of the stretch to coast home a six length winner with Quinary finishing
second.
Bred by Lazy Lane Stables, Backstreet Blues is by Secret Hello, out of the
Dixieland Band, Backwater Blues. Backstreet Blues was purchased as a yearling
at the 1999 Fasig-Tipton October Timonium sale for the bargain price of
$5,700.
(7/12)
Maiden Score
Gallagher's Stud homebred, EVENTAIL, moved off the turf to the dirt
today and powered by front running Homah Ling Ling at the top of the stretch,
won by three and one-half lengths over Lyndsey Love who got up for second
money. After finishing on the board in her previous three starts, trainer
Richard Schosberg decided to enter the three year-old filly in a one and
one-sixteenth mile one turn race over the main track at Belmont Park. The
experience and conditioning of the grass races proved a valuable asset and
it wasn't missed by the betting public, as she was sent off as the odds-on
betting favorite, under jockey Edgar Prado.
Bred at Mr. Jerry Brody's Gallagher's
Stud Farm in Ghent, New York, Eventail is by Lear Fan, out of the Rubiano
mare, Felicita.
(7/10) HOLLYWOOD DERBY-GI
New York-bred DAVID finished a respectable third in the $1 Million
Hollywood Derby-GI, behind Early Pioneer and General Challenge, after leading
to the top of the stretch in the one and one-quarter mile race over the
main strip at Hollywood Park. For David, last year's winner of the second
leg of the Big Apple Triple - the New York Derby,
it was the first time he raced at the distance and he set some torrid fractions
of :46.2 and 1:10 for six furlongs. Although passed at the top of the stretch
by General Challenge, he managed to mount a late close and lost by only
a one and one-half length for second money. The Barry K. Schwartz owned
and bred David was narrowly beaten by the winner, Early Pioneer, in the
Gr. II -San Bernardino in April with General Challenge finishing back in
the field.
(7/9)
Belmont Finale
After breaking his maiden in his last outing, LIGHT UP THE SKY came
right back to win against state-bred allowance horse today at beautiful
Belmont Park. Surviving a rough start, when he was knocked sideways, the
four year-old son of Thunder Rumble, raced wide and just got up at the wire
to win by a nose over Key On Richie. Owned by Iniscarra Stable and bred
by Harry Landry of Saratoga Springs, Light Up the Sky is out of the Sir
Raleigh mare, Timeleighness.
(7/9)
First Out a Winner
Joseph Gerrity's homebred, ORA, won first crack out of the box with
an eye opening four wide move in the last turn to defeat two year-old filly
maidens today at Belmont Park. Trained by Ramon (Mike) Hernandez, the daughter
of Quiet American, out of the Halo mare, Charmed Aura, was ridden by jockey
Jose Espinoza.
(7/9)
Filio Mio
John Nerud's homebred, SON, found the winner's circle on his fourth
attempt against state-bred maidens today at Belmont Park. A close second
to Jazz Pro in his last attempt, the three year-old chestnut colt led every
step of the way in a six furlong affair racing for $41,000. By Mr. Nerud's
stallion, Husband, Son is out of the graded stakes winning Alydar mare,
Clabber Girl, who earned over $1 Million dollars on the racetrack. Her two-year
old son, Tequestas (A.P Jet) recently broke his maiden.
(7/8)
Determined Winner
Our Seven Stables' PLATINUM SETTING, put in a late run under jockey
Jorge Chavez, and held off the late closing Brave One by a length to score
against state-bred allowance horses. Racing over the inner turf course at
Belmont Park, the long striding gray gelding was bred by Joseph Lostritto
at his La Famiglia Farm in Old Brookville, New York. Platinum Setting is
by Silver Ghost, out of the Theatrical (Ire) mare, Broadway, and has now
earned $71,790 with a Lifetime Record: 11-2-1-2.
(7/8) Impressive Maiden Win
Gallagher's Studs' ADORAHY, broke her maiden today in her second
attempt at beautiful Belmont Park. Finishing second in her first race in
early June, the three year-old daughter of Rahy-Adorable Micol, by Riverman,
gained from that experience as she put in a very professional effort against
state-bred maidens going seven furlongs.
Bred by Jerry Brody's Gallagher's
Stud, Adorahy is a half-sister to several stakes placed winners including
Adoryhar (Lyphard), Adorydar (Alydar) and the graded stakes winner Adcat
(Storm Cat).
(7/7)
Tactical Change
Racing under clear blues skies in mild warm weather at beautiful Belmont
Park, OUR PATTY was sent to the lead by apprentice jockey Norberto
Arroyo, Jr., and lead every step of the way to handily beat state-bred allowance
fillies and mares. In thirteen previous races, Our Patty raced from off
the pace. However, trainer Robert Barbara decided a change of tactics was
needed in order to get the three year-old daughter of Personal Flag out
of her eight race sophmore slump.
Owned by Gee H.W.Stable, and bred by John Meriweather and Richard Leahy,
Our Patty is out of the Gulch mare, Axe Creek, who is a half-sister to graded
stakes winner, With A Twist (Fappiano) and graded stakes-placed winners,
Most Likely (Fappiano) and Seaside Dancer (Secreto). Originally sold as
a yearling for $25,000, she was resold at the 1999 OBS two year-old in training
sales for $45,000. Today's win pushes her earnings to $83,760 with a Lifetime
Record: 14-2-1-2.
(7/7)
Maiden Score
Peter O'Reilly's CARO WEE DANCER found the winners circle in her
second lifetime start today at beautiful Belmont Park. Racing over the inner
turf course at a distance of one and one-quarter mile, the 3 year-old daughter
of Double Negative made a sweeping move in the last turn and jockey Chris
DeCarlo guided her clear for a two length winning margin.
Bred by the partnership of Peter O'Reilly, Michael McPoland and Anthony
Kelly, the talented Caro Wee Dancer is out of the Val de l'Orne (Fr) mare,
Chez Francine, and all indications, thus far, point to a promising career
on the turf.

score in 1:10 for the six furlong race.

Triumphant Return
Breaking alertly from the one-horse position, BEAT THE GATE TONY
led every step of the way against state-bred allowance horses at beautiful
Belmont Park. Away from the races for over a year, trainer Warren Pascuma
had the three year-old son of Double Negative as tight as a drum for his
second lifetime start.
Bred by Michael Pascuma and owned by the partnership of Warren Pascuma and
James Heller, Beat the Gate Tony is out of the Ends Well mare, Ada Cort.
(7/1)
MIKE LEE STAKES
James F. Edwards' homebred,
IMAGE MAKER, won the first leg of the Big Apple Triple, the Mike
Lee Stakes, today at beautiful Belmont Park. As the race unfurled, Entepreneur
and Appealing Danger hooked up early and raced around the far turn and into
deep stretch, with Image Maker in hot pursuit. Ridden by jockey Jorge Chavez,
Image Maker had to check hard up the backstretch and lost ground and momemtum,
causing Chavez to implore his charge to give a little extra through the
stretch run. Making up over 7 lengths, Image Maker caught the front running
pair in the final strides avoiding interference from Entepreneur as he bore
out into Appealing Danger which resulted in a disqualification to third.
The seven furlong affair had three defections as Scottish Halo, Ruthie's
Double and Cardinal Concern were scratched from the race.
Image Maker is by Distinctive Pro, out of the 100% producing Halo mare,
Halo Country, who is the dam of stakes winners Prospector's Luck (Crafty

New York, which is east of Rochester and home of Finger Lakes Racetrack
on July 29th. Run at a one and one-sixteenth mile, the New York Derby has
a purse of $125,000, and Image Maker will have to do something he hasn't
done in his seven race career and that's go around two turns. He won the
New York Futurity as a two year-old at Finger Lakes after finishing second
in the Aspirant Stakes over the same oval.
(7/1) Wootie Scores
Richard Bomze's homebred, WOOTIE, roared around horses in the far
