(4/30) Win With Beck wins open N2X allowance
Stewart Hoffman's New York homebred WIN WITH BECK upset hotshot odds-on (.65-to-1) three-year-old Oratory in the richest allowance race on Aqueduct's Saturday card, an open N2X allowance for three-year-olds and up going a mile and an eighth, setting all the fractions and winning by a length. Race-ridden for the first time by New York Thoroughbred Breeders (NYTB) 2004 Jockey of the Year Richard Migliore and sent off the 6.10-to-1 third choice among five starters, the four-year-old increased his earnings by $27,600 to $145,960 and improved his record to 5 - 0 - 1 in 14 starts. His effort in the fog also qualified his owner-breeder, Hoffman of Arlington, Texas, for an additional $11,040 in owner and breeder awards ($5,520 each). New York-bred Dont Knock America (earnings now $192,585) placed third as the 3-to-1 second choice. Win With Beck had broken his maiden on turf at Belmont last July and had won an open N1X allowance going a mile and an eighth on Aqueduct's inner track in February while coming from dead last. The bay colt had been given four April workouts over Belmont's training track -- including one at seven furlongs and two at six furlongs -- by trainer James Jerkens after finishing fifth in a mile and an eighth open N2X allowance at Aqueduct on March 19. Win With Beck is among at least 23 winners in 2005 sired by pensioned New York stallion Personal Flag, whose syndicate connections qualified for a $1,932 stallion award. The Hoffman homebred's victory also pushed the 2005 progeny earnings for Personal Flag, a multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire who resides at Joe and Anne McMahon's McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds, LLC in Saratoga Springs, to right at the half-million mark with cumulative progeny earnings totaling more than $30-million. Win With Beck is the second offspring and second New York-bred winner bred by Hoffman from Matter of Trust, who raced for Hoffman and is a half-sister to stakes winners I Am the Prince ($577,859 in Japan), In Frank's Honor ($479,360), and Don Juan A plus router Dionysus ($154,329). A Hypo-Mating check of Win With Beck's pedigree reveals that he is inbred 3 x 4 to juvenile champion and major sire Hoist the Flag.
In a seven-furlong N2X allowance for New York-bred three-year-olds, BE WILD AGAIN likewise scored a front-running victory, winning by 4-1/2 lengths in 1:23.70 over the "good" but sealed track with jockey Norberto Arroyo Jr. on board for the fifth time in five career starts. The bay colt's odds-on (.70-to-1 among seven starters) victory in his first effort beyond six furlongs increased his earnings by $27,000 to $95,000 and improved his never-worse-than-second record to 3 - 2 - 0 for his owners, Jeffrey A. Seder's Houyhnhnm Stable, Peter Vegso, and Kenneth J. Strauss. He was the first of two consecutive winners sent out by trainer William Turner Jr., who had given the New York-bred two solid Belmont workouts following a second-place effort in a restricted N2X Aqueduct allowance going six furlongs on April 8, and the first of two winners ridden by Arroyo. Be Wild Again's third win at Aqueduct in 2005 qualified his breeders, Donald and Mary Zuckerman of Fort Lauderdale, Florida "as Tenants by the Entireties", for a $5,400 breeder award. He is the second offspring and second Aqueduct N2X allowance winner of 2005 bred by the Zuckermans from juvenile winner I'm Beguiled Again, being a full brother to the Zuckermans' four-year-old New York homebred, Tomorrows Magic. The three-year-old is among at least 15 winners in 2005 sired by syndicated New York-based stallion Tomorrows Cat (Storm Cat - Tomorrow's Child, by Al Nasr), who stands at Metropolitan Stud (managed by Michael and Debra Lischin) in Pine Plains for a 2005 fee of $7,500, live foal. The syndicate that owns Grade 2 winner Tomorrows Cat, whose 2005 progeny earnings now exceed a half-million with cumulative progeny earnings approaching $4.6-million, is managed by Questroyal Stallions and qualified for a $1,890 stallion award. Be Wild Again was foaled at Marlene Brody's Gallagher's Stud in Ghent and was purchased for $110,000 at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's (OBS) March 2004 sale of two-year-olds in training by trainer Patrice Miller as agent for E.Q.B., Inc. of West Grove, Pennsylvania. He had been a $25,000 sales yearling at Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga preferred New York-bred auction seven months earlier, but at a pre-OBS sale under tack show, Be Wild Again had equaled the fastest furlong workout of the day -- 10 2/5 seconds.
In Aqueduct's Saturday "foggy finale", a restricted N1X allowance for three-year-olds going a one-turn mile, even-money favorite ZIM AND TORRE emerged from the gloom to carry a four-length lead to the wire under jockey Edgar Prado, who was aboard him for the second consecutive time in competition. The victory increased the bay colt's earnings by $26,400 to $61,800 while improving his record in four starts to 2 - 1 - 0. Zim and Torre races for his breeder, Sanford Goldfarb, in partnership with Michael Casper, William Vidro, and Ira Davis, and his victory also qualified Goldfarb, of Old Westbury, for an additional $2,640 breeder award. NYTB 2002 Trainer of the Year Richard Dutrow Jr. had given the New York-bred three April workouts at Aqueduct following a fourth-place effort under Prado in a restricted N1X Aqueduct allowance going a one-turn mile on March 26. Zim and Torre, who had won first-out in the mud at Aqueduct on February 4, had been a $57,000 "reserve not attained" offering at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic's May 2004 sale of two-year-olds in training in Timonium, Maryland. He was a full month away from his chronological three-year-old birthday of May 31 when he won on Saturday and is the first winner produced from rock-solid Motel Malibu ($201,400), a Bates Motel mare that Goldfarb apparently acquired privately a few years ago. Motel Malibu, who is a half-sister to stakes winner Lombardi's Romance, won 10 races from two to five -- seven routes and three sprints -- but she never won on a wet track.

(4/29) Soul Possession wins at first asking for Partingglass Stable
SOUL POSSESSION was an impressive first out maiden winner gamely battling for the lead to the top of the stretch before drawing off to win by more than four lengths. Owned by the racing partnership of Partingglass Stable, managed by Thomas J. Gallo, the three-year-old chestnut filly broke from the three-post in the 9-horse field. The state-bred race for fillies and mares was originally carded for the turf but was moved to Aqueduct's main track, listed "fast," and run at a mile around one-turn. Trainer Barclay Tagg, who recently shipped north from ulfstream Park, worked the filly twice over Belmont's main track and had the first time starter primed for her debut. Tagg, who has won with three of the five horses he's saddled at Aqueduct, named journeyman jockey Shaun Bridgmohan to ride the daughter of Belong to Me out of the multiple stakes winner and graded stakes-placed Try N Sue (Sir Harry Lewis) a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Buy the Sport (Devil's Bag), and stakes winners Winter Dreams (Distinctive Pro) and Haggs Castle (Husband). Soul Possession was foaled at Silvernails Farm in Pine Plains, N.Y. and was bred by Mia Gallo (Blue Stone Farm) and Coffee Pot Stable (Robert Cummings).
TOMORROWS CHAMP knocked out his rivals today after a 9-month layoff at Big A closing through the stretch with a vengeance to register a 3-1/2-length victory. Owned and bred by Donald and Mary Zuckerman, the four year old bay colt is trained by Todd Pletcher, last year's Eclipse Award winning trainer. Jockey Richard Migliore rated Tomorrows Champ close to the pace before turning the dark bay colt loose at the top of the homestretch. The NW-1X condition allowance race for state-breds was run at 1-1/8th mile over Aqueduct's turf course, listed "firm." Tomorrows Champ is the first foal out of the dam, who's a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Advice (Advocator), who won four stakes and eleven races overall in a 37-race career.
Closing out the Friday card, Richard Thatcher's owned and bred PENNY PEQUOT, entered for main-track only, took early command of the one-turn mile event for state-bred maidens, opened up a clear margin and arrived at the top of the homestretch with an eight-length lead and held off all challengers to win by over three lengths under the wire. Originally carded for the turf at 1-1/16th, the race was moved to the main track and run at a mile around one-turn. Jockey Norberto Arroyo, Jr. has been aboard in all of the three year-old filly's races finishing third in her first start followed by two second place finishes at the same one-mile distance prior to today's easy score as the odds-on favorite. Penny Pequot is trained by Dominic Galluscio, whose barn is starting to heat up.

(4/28) Brushme On continues to roll under trainer Tom Bush
Dor Sal Stable's BRUSHME ON continues to thrive under the care of trainer Tom Bush winning for the third time in her last four outings with a second-place finish over a "muddy" track thrown in for good measure. The three-year-old dark bay filly was making her third start of the 2005 season against state-bred fillies and mares in a NW-2X condition allowance race run over Aqueduct's main track, listed "fast." Bet down to the even-money race-time favorite Brushme On broke from the outside 8-post position in the one-turn mile affair. The talented filly was bred by Sal Catania, who manages Dor Sal Stable, and is by Brushed On, who stood at Liberty Stud through the end of the 2003 breeding season. The $27,600 winner's share of the purses elevates Brushme On's lifetime earnings above the century mark to $101,328 in 10-career starts.
Paul Pompa, Jr.'s MACKLENIN won his second consecutive race and first against open company horses in an open claiming ($50,000 - $40,000) race run at a mile over Aqueduct's turf course, labeled "good." Making his first start over the turf, Macklenin rated just off the flank of fellow New York-bred Wild Vicar to the top of the stretch before taking the lead soon after the field straightened for the home. The open company score qualifies Pompa for a $2,160 open owner's award. Part of the Gary Sciacca trained entry, along with Skip the Melody; Macklenin was ridden to victory by Jose Santos. The $21, 600 winner's purse boosts the three-year-old colt's lifetime earnings to $81,956 in 9-starts.
Briefcase Partner's SEA LAWYER making his career debut against state-bred maiden horses, was hustled to the lead by jockey Jose Santos, set the pace, and after fending off a challenge by Whenluvcomestotown through the homestretch drew off to win by over four lengths. Trainer Linda Rice put a series of four and five furlong works over Belmont Park's training track and had the colt sharp as a tack. The main track at Aqueduct was listed as "good" for this, the first race on the card, before being changed to "fast" prior to the running of the third race. Bred by Roger Toffolon, Sea Lawyer is by Sea Salute, a regally bred son of Danzig, who stands at Liberty Stud in Ghent, N. Y.
GAME LADY, owned and bred by Barry K. Schwartz, held off a strong challenge by Harbor House to capture an open claimer ($30,000 - $25,000) for fillies and mares, four year-olds and up in the finale. In for a tag of $25,000 the Mike Hushion trained bay filly was ridden to victory by apprentice jockey Eriluis Vaz, who qualifies for a 5lb weight allowance.

(4/27) Princess Jasmine confident state-bred allowance winner at Big A
Paraneck Stable's PRINCESS JASMINE took the lead as soon as the starting gate opened and never looked back easily defeating a field of NW-2X condition allowance fillies and mares, today, at Aqueduct Racetrack. Heavy overnight rain forced the stewards to move the race from turf to dirt and shorten the distance from 1-1/16th run around two-turns to a one-turn mile run over the "sloppy" main track. Trainer Jennifer Pedersen named jockey Norberto Arroyo, Jr. to ride the four year-old chestnut filly, who has won three out four races and raised her bankroll by $27,600 to $103,210 in 14-career starts. Princess Jasmine was bred by the partnership of Becky Thomas and Lewis Lakin, owners of Lakland North Farm in Hudson, N.Y. Princess Jasmine is the 29th winner of 2005 and the 54th overall from two crops to race sired by the 1999 Eclipse Champion Sprinter Artax, a syndicated stallion who stands at Metropolitan Stud in Pine Plains for a fee of $10,000, live foal.
Castle Village Farm's RAF AND READY became the second winner sired by Raffie's Majesty and bred by Majesty Stud as the three year-old chestnut filly defeated a NW-1X condition allowance field of state-bred fillies and mares. The main track was listed as "muddy" after the running of the sixth race, won by Princess Jasmine, and a field of 9-state-breds went to the starting gate for the one-turn mile event. Trained by William H. Turner, Jr. and ridden by journeyman jockey Jean-Luc Samyn, Raf and Ready raced off the pace to the top of the homestretch before mounting her drive down the middle of the track for the victory.
Majesty Stud's homebred CROP BUSTER, who narrowly lost his last start, led at every call of a nine-furlong state-bred maiden race to register his first-career victory. Run over a "sloppy" main track around two-turns, Crop Buster drew off in the final furlong to win by 3-1/2-lengths. The $25,200 winner's share of the purse boosts the three-year-old chestnut colt's earnings to $42,118 in 5-lifetime starts. Trained by Dominic Galluscio and ridden to victory by journeyman jockey Cornelio Velasquez, Crop Buster was bred by Majesty Stud, managed by Digby Barrios.

(4/24) Gold And Roses Digs In When It Counts By Francis LaBelle, Jr. (NYRA Press office)
Henry C. Gregory's GOLD AND ROSES had won two of seven starts entering Sunday's Times Square Division of the New York Stallion Stakes, and in both victories, he won by daylight.
But on Sunday, at Aqueduct Racetrack, the Gold Token gelding dug in during the final strides and emerged with a half-length victory over Big Apple Daddy in the $150,000 one-turn mile event for horses sired by registered New York-based stallions.
"He showed us he was game today," said trainer Tom Bush, as Gold and Roses returned $10.60 to win. "He's been so free-running in his victories, that I couldn't get a real line on him. He was in a fight today, and he showed heart. I was thrilled that he dug in, because he is not crazy about getting hit. Shaun (Bridgmohan, jockey) just kept hand-riding him, and he just kept giving it to him."
The battle was joined early after a bumpy start, as Gold and Roses sparred with Summerland through the opening half-mile of: 45 1/5. Big Apple and Galloping Grocer joined the fray as six furlongs went in a snappy 1:08 4/5.
Through the lane, however, Gold and Roses refused to waver and got the win in 1:36.
"He was all heart," Bridgmohan said. "Big Apple Daddy attacked him from the half-mile and he kept digging in. He fought back. It was a very gutsy effort and a good job by Tom Bush. He's done a phenomenal job."
Bush said he will keep Gold and Roses on the New York-bred trail and will likely run in the $100,000 Mike Lee at seven furlongs at Belmont Park on June 26th; Finger Lakes' $150,000 New York Derby at a mile and a sixteenth on July 16th; and, Saratoga's $150,000, nine-furlong Albany on August 24th. Those races make up The OTB's Big Apple Triple, and a sweep means a $250,000 bonus to the winner.
It was the third straight loss for Galloping Grocer, the favorite of the crowd of 4,142. He is winless in three starts this year after starting off as one of the winter book favorites to win the Kentucky Derby.
"I thought he ran well," said his trainer, Dominick Schettino. "He was right up there on a fast pace. Edgar (Prado) said he really didn't handle the track that well. He kept on fighting until the end."
Twooutintheninth, Accurate, Sideways Glance and Summerland trailed. Distinctive Trick was scratched.

(4/24) Pretty Suzi Makes Big Statement with Comeback Win By Francis LaBelle Jr. (NYRA Press office)
James F. Edwards' PRETTY SUZI has speed, and trainer H. James Bond knew there was plenty of speed in Sunday's $150,000 Park Avenue Division of the New York Stallion Stakes for three-year-old, New York-bred fillies at a mile.
What he was hoping for was that the distance would prove too much for Pretty Suzi's rivals.
Bond's wish came true as Pretty Suzi, after dueling with R.B.'s Token through a sizzling half-mile reached in 44-seconds flat, came back on the inside under Pablo Fragoso to overtake favored Dynamo Hum and win by two and a quarter lengths.
Bond had been kicking himself for starting Pretty Suzi's career at six furlongs on the inner dirt track back on February 19th. But when she came back on April 2, she was wearing blinkers and given a sloppy track on which to run. She won easily, and set herself up for Sunday's performance before 4,142 fans.
"I shouldn't have run her six furlongs in her first start," Bond said. "I was going to wait to run her on the outer, but she was doing so well, I figured we would take a shot at six furlongs on the inner. She moved to the outer, we put the blinkers on and she focused. You know the rest.
Today, we're a hero. Hopefully, tomorrow we're not a bum. I thought she would be laying third. There was a lot of speed in the race. I wasn't too worried when Dynamo Hum came along side, because she only looked like a six-furlong horse on paper to me. So, she was in as much trouble as we were."
Dynamo Hum had actually taken the lead, but Pretty Suzi came back in a terrific performance to win in 1:36 3/5. She returned $14.40. Ms Litigator was third, followed by Karakorum Splendor.

Alan Brodsky's MORNING GALLOP made it two victories in a row with another rousing off the pace effort. Trailing by more than seven lengths at the top of the homestretch, Morning Gallop kicked into high gear picking off her competition one by one while running in the middle of the track before racing to the lead 50-yards from the wire and drew off to win by more than two-lengths. The NW-1X condition allowance for state-bred fillies and mares was originally carded for the turf at 1-1/16th but heavy overnight rains caused the race to move to the main track, listed "fast", and was run at a mile around one-turn. Trained by Mark Hennig, Morning Gallop was ridden to victory by Mike Luzzi.
John Michelotti's homebred SWEET NOBILITY sporting blinkers for the first time in her four-race career kept in close contact with the early pace setter, Visionesque, before exploding through the stretch to win by six-lengths under the wire. The second division of state-bred maiden fillies and mares was run at seven furlongs with trainer Robert Corrado giving a leg-up to journeyman jockey Shaun Bridgmohan.
Starting off Aqueduct's Sunday card, Sackatoga Stable's ISLAND REVERSAL won the first division of state-bred maiden fillies and mares affair run over the main track at seven furlongs. Making her first start at the distance, the three-year-old dark bay filly stalked Krizz from the break to the top of the stretch before battling head to head through the homestretch gaining the lead inside the sixteenth pole and held off a late challenge by Dreamscancometrue by three-quarters of a length.
Sackatoga Stable, whose Funny Cide won the 2004 New York-bred Older Male Divisional Championship as well as 2004 Horse of the Year honors awarded by the New York Thoroughbred Breeder's Association is managed by Jackson Knowlton. Sackatoga Stable purchased Island Reversal at the 2004 March OBS two-year-old in-training sale for $65,000 and the daughter of Tactical Advantage is trained by Barclay Tagg and was ridden to victory by journeyman jockey Jose Santos.

(4/23) Storm Boot Gold and Nevaeh win Big A open N1X allowance races
Scoring his second consecutive Aqueduct victory in 15 days and first venture against open company, Steven Wecker's New York-bred STORM BOOT GOLD led most of the way and regained command to win a Saturday N1X allowance for four-year-olds and up going six furlongs, with New York-bred Bogota Bill placing third. The favored (2-to-1) four-year-old was race-ridden for the ninth time by "bug" jockey Eriluis Vaz, whose five-pound apprentice allowance enabled Storm Boot Gold to compete at equal weights with four of his five rivals despite his April 8 win under Vaz at the restricted N2X allowance level. The victory increased Storm Boot Gold's earnings by $25,800 to $177,658 and enhanced the bay gelding's rapidly-improving record to 4 - 7 - 3 in 16 starts, and it also qualified Wecker for an additional $2,580 owner award. Barry Schwartz's homebred Bogota Bill boosted his earnings to $124,110 and qualified his owner for an additional $1,720 in owner and breeder awards, as New York-breds qualified for a total of $7,181 in owner, breeder, and stallion awards. Storm Boot Gold, who is conditioned by New York Thoroughbred Breeders (NYTB) 2004 Trainer of the Year Gary Contessa, qualified his breeder, the Sez Who Thoroughbreds of Richard Simon of Aventura, Florida, for a $2,580 breeder award. Simon, who owns Sez Who Thoroughbreds North, LLC in Stillwater, had purchased Storm Boot Gold's multiple stakes-winning dam, Shananie's Light ($218,005), for $70,000 at Keeneland's 1999 November sale in Lexington, Kentucky when she was carrying her first foal, a future winning colt by Defrere. Storm Boot Gold is the second offspring and second winner produced from Shananie's Light, a route-running half-sister to multiple stakes-placed three-time sprint winner Maggie's Mischief ($120,412).
Saturday's first New York-bred open six-furlong Aqueduct allowance victor was Wayne Ewald's four-year-old filly NEVAEH, winner of the N1X opener for fillies and mares with a late outside charge under jockey Aaron Gryder, who has now ridden the chestnut filly in six races and three victories. The race was contested by seven starters, six of which were New York-breds, with Nevaeh going off as the 5.20-to-1 third choice and beating New York-bred Schemer, the 2.05-to-1 favorite, by a half-length as New York-breds picked up 90 percent of the total purse. The victory increased Nevaeh's earnings by $25,800 to $150,368 and improved her record to 4 - 3 - 1 in 18 starts, and it qualified Ewald, of Tudor Acres Racing & Breeding in East Kingston, New Hampshire, for an additional $2,580 owner award. Schemer (now $166,510), a homebred, qualified her connections for a total of $1,720 in owner and breeder awards, and New York-bred fourth-place finish
