The EMPIRE STAKES for two-year-old New York Breds was inaugurated in 1976. It was run at Belmont from 1989 to 1991 and at Saratoga in 1992. Run at 5 1/2 furlongs in 1989. As of 1994, the EMPIRE STAKES will be known as the EMPIRE CLASSIC. It was previously run for two-year-old colts at a distance of six furlongs. Run at a changed distance of a mile and a eighth in 1994.

Trainer Ramon "Mike" Hernandez dominated the young event, sending three horses to the winner`s circle in the first five years. All three of Hernandez' winners were owned by the Assunta Louis Farm. New York is known as the EMPIRE State.
