Taking command under John Velazquez early in the mile-and-a-sixteenth Mount Vernon Stakes on the inner turf course at Saratoga Wednesday, Bourbon Stable and HGS Thoroughbreds’ five-year-old mare Spinning Colors rolled to a three-length victory.
In doing so, Spinning Colors improved her Saratoga record to three-for-four. She was dropping back to New York-bred stakes company off a front-running seventh-place finish in an open stakes at Gulfstream Park under Javier Castellano on March 29th.
Silver Skillet was a clear second and Awesome Czech finished third.
William Parsons Jr. and David Howe bred Spinning Colors, a daughter of Hard Spun out of Kaleidoscope by Elusive Quality who is trained by Mark Hennig.
Sent off at 7-1 odds from the two post in a field of 10, Spinning Colors went for the lead early, as did Cara’s Time and Ruben Silvera. Spinning Colors took the lead and strolled through a half-mile in a glacial :50.33 on the firm course. “I said, `I’m going to go,’” Velazquez said. “Then she was all by herself.”
Spinning Colors spurted away to a three-length lead, and she maintained it to the wire, winning in a final time of 1:43.27.
Spinning Colors is now five-of-10 on turf with two seconds and earnings of $345,100. She also has one third from three dirt starts, and was off the board in her lone try on a synthetic surface.
