Registered New York-Breds Start with an Advantage

The New York State Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund Corporation administers an awards and incentive program for thoroughbreds foaled in New York and registered with the Fund who finish first, second or third at New York tracks.

There are more than 45 stakes races with total purses exceeding $4 million scheduled annually by the New York Racing Association and Finger Lakes Racing Association exclusively for registered New York-breds. In addition, there were close to 700 restricted races written in 2011 at NYRA and dozens more at Finger Lakes. Races restricted to registered NY-breds include, maiden, maiden claiming and allowance conditions, as well as stakes races.

Big Apple Triple runners are registered 3-year-old NY-breds who run for upwards of $450,000 in the Mike Lee at Belmont, the New York Derby at Finger Lakes, and The Albany Stakes at historic Saratoga Racecourse.

New York Showcase Day, held at Belmont in October, features seven stakes races with purses totaling close to a million dollars exclusively for registered NY-breds.

New York Stallion Stakes Series runners can come from anywhere!  If you have a 2-year-old, 3-year-old or older horse that is sired by a NY stallion that’s registered with the Breeding Fund, you have another $950,000 in total purse money to run for at NYRA, with ten races on tap for 2012. For eligibility, contact Carmine Shirlaw at NYRA at [email protected].

Breeder Awards reward breeders of registered NY-breds, in keeping with the Fund’s mission to breed quality thoroughbreds. The reward is potentially even greater for breeders of horses sired by a registered New York stallion under the two-tiered Breeder Awards program. The Fund pays owner bonuses on a bi-monthly basis.
